Nier: Automata not coming to Xbox One

The game’s producer Yosuke Saito claimed that low sales of the console in Japan are to blame for the decision, adding that it wasn’t a matter of the ‘better’ platform but merely a development decision. He went on to say that focusing on one platform allowed them to work on the quality of the game, explaining:

  • “There are currently no plans to release on this platform. The main reason for this is that the Japanese market for Xbox One is not strong, so the decision was made to focus on PlayStation 4 rather than to split our efforts across two platforms.
  • The biggest benefit to developing on one platform is that we did not have to split our time, allowing us to focus more on the quality. It is not about whether one platform is better than the other, it’s that from a development point of view were can devote more time to one platform.”

It could be speculated that cancelation of Scalebound, a project Platinum Games was heading, last month could have led to this decision since the game’s predecessor was released for Xbox 360. But, for whatever reason, Xbox One users won’t be able to play the dark action RPG game on their consoles.

Nier: Automata releases for PlayStation 4 on March 7 with a PC version to follow later this year. If you are a PS4 user, you can demo the game here or if you’ve already made up your mind, you can preorder Nier: Automata here.
